  19. 8 bit is fine.  But I don't think that Icon knows about so-called long
  20. characters.

  22. You'd think that a language renowned for character and string proces-
  23. sing would handle multinational and extended character encoding stand-
  24. ards, but in fact I think someone would have to go through and really
  25. think hard about what they would mean for csets.  The implementation
  26. would have to be altered on some basic level for strings, too, since
  27. these assume 8-bit characters.  Probably lotsa other stuff, too.

  29. I dunno:  Does anyone working on implementation details know whether
  30. there are any plans for alternate-width characters?
